Liberate Systems

Free the Future

Liberate Systems integrates several core functions, which are meant to support the mission of discovering the critical ingredients of a non-polluting, sustainable economy capable of sustaining a future of personal freedom, real human dignity, and opportunity, for all.

Our name points to a layered strategic outlook:

  • Complex industrial, informational, financial, and political systems, can support improvements to human dignity and wellbeing, or they can impose constraints that lead to dehumanizing dynamics and degraded outcomes.
  • We are often asked, by dominant political and managerial cultures, to consent to power and influence accumulating in the hands of those who prioritize accumulation of wealth over delivery of real benefits to others.
  • The purpose of business in a self-governing society of free people is to provide value in ways that improve lives, expand opportunity, and allow everyone to have greater agency in their experience.
  • We can liberate complex systems from the outmoded thinking that links income to destruction and asset-building to the depletion of natural capital and the marginalization of human rights and wellbeing.

We can free the future to favor those who succeed by doing right by others, by enhancing the agency of customers and counterparts, by upgrading the details and the dynamics of human experience, while treating Nature and its life-sustaining systems with respect, for the good of all.

We can do this through:

  • good-faith considered assessment of Earth system health and resilience insights;
  • application of those insights to local conditions and to rooted aspirations of communities and cultures;
  • innovations in data science and science translation, to empower more people to make informed choices;
  • development of materials and technologies that make non-polluting energy the universal norm;
  • pursuit of new business models that center, value, and reproduce resilience value at scale.

Each of our ventures, both in strategic foresight and technical innovation, aims to answer this call, to manifest one or more of these levers of transformation, and to support progress on the Sustainable Development Goals in local and global context. We see this not as an add-on, but as the fast track to sustainable enterprise.

The future of technology is not abstracted from human experience, and it is not another phase of destructive industrialization. The future of technology is one where human rghts, health, dignity, and opportunity, are enhanced, and benefits to the health of Nature are priorities of successful commercial ventures, large and small.

Be Prepared.

Sustainability challenges are livability challenges. Entire economies fail to work efficiently or durably, if returns on investment do not include real-life improvements to everyday experience. Be prepared to make those improvements.

What to measure in the Age of Risk

Fast-paced change disrupts trusted features of our living reality, and creates risks where we did not previously expect to see them. In the early 21st century, we are witnessing planetary systems and everyday technologies disrupted and evolving…

    Endangerment is not a matter of opinion

    The Endangerment Finding is a formal recognition by the US Environmental Protection Agency that climate disruption poses a threat to human health and safety. It serves as the foundation for U.S. federal climate policy and the regulation of greenhouse gases—the chemical compounds that trap heat in Earth’s atmosphere and drive global heating. In 2009, the…

    Food systems will shape our future

    Geodesiq Strategies for Healthy, Sustainable Food Systems Food is woven into virtually all areas of human experience. Food depends on the health of Nature, on climate patterns, on watersheds, on vibrant, resilient ecosystems, and yet, we too often see ourselves as disconnected from questions of planetary health. Planetary health is integral to human health and…

    Opportunity is everywhere—the resilience economy is emerging

    Communities everywhere need risk reduction and resilience measures.  Green infrastructure—including soil biomass and well-rooted forests, mangroves in coastal areas prone to tropical storms, and mountain glaciers that serve as stable headwaters for healthy watersheds—is essential for maintaining human security and prosperity. Costs of climate inaction are reaching record levels, so even governments that wish to deprioritize climate…
